NOAA-CREST RESEARCH: Precipitation and Water Resources - Hydro Climate

This thrust area has close ongoing collaborations with NESDIS and NWS and addresses
NOAA’s Mission Goals in Weather and Water and Ecosystems. The team is comprised of two groups: Hydroclimate and Land Hydrology.

Hydroclimate Research

Goals:
Developing satellite multi-sensor rainfall and snowfall retrieval algorithms and merging model estimates with ground truth measurements to improve quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE).

• Validating remotely sensed rainfall products for improving their retrieval algorithms.

• Enhancing satellite-based precipitation nowcasts over the New York City metropolitan area and applying this algorithm as a test bed for NOAA’s goal to develop a satellite based nowcasting capability for the entire nation.
